Parcel Post Dispatch, Winnipeg

For years, the Eaton's Catalogue was a staple in Canadian households. It even features in our literature and plays a central role in Roch Carrier's famous story "The Hockey Sweater/ Le Chandail de hockey."

In order to deliver the thousands of orders it received each year, the company established several regional distribution centres, such as this one in Winnipeg. Even in 1943, in the middle of war, the scene is a busy one of organized chaos, as parcels are sent to anxious customers across the country. Most of the employees were women; it was a job that could offer shifts suited to working mothers.
